Harmful Use of Substances or Alcohol by Students Policy

The University is committed to supporting its students and recognises the impact that the harmful use of substances or alcohol can have on a student’s health and wellbeing and the wider University community.  However, balanced against this, is that the University is aware that students may choose to use alcohol, to a harmful extent, and if they do, or are thinking about using them, the University wants students to be able to make informed decisions with their own safety and welfare in mind.  This Policy is written to help set out the University’s position on this sensitive topic.

Our expectations of you under this Policy

  • If you are using or thinking of using alcohol, to a harmful extent, or substances then you will take the time to read this Policy.
  • That you will make yourself familiar with the sources of support at the University so if you do consume alcohol to a harmful extent, or substances, you know how and where to reach out.

Your expectations of us under this Policy

  • The University will take a harm reduction approach where possible with a focus on educational and support intervention.
  • The University may need to look at action outside a harm reduction approach if the situation is serious and/or there are other considerations it needs to take account of.
  • There will be a collaborative effort across the University and the Students’ Union to provide support for students in this area.
