Aims to make the University’s process for mitigation easier to understand. Sometimes, factors beyond your control can affect your academic performance. In such cases, the University may be able to take your circumstances into consideration when reviewing your assessment results or arrangements. This leaflet aims to provide details of this process.
Undergraduates, Taught postgraduates
If you are considering submitting a case of mitigating circumstances in cases where your performance has been adversely affected, you are advised to read this document and, if you do decide to go ahead, follow the details set out in it. There are deadlines in place for submitting cases, which your School will be able to inform you of, so you need to make sure that you submit a case before the requested deadline.
Programme teams / Schools should publicise their processes for consideration of mitigating circumstances and details of deadlines. Applications are considered by a Mitigating Circumstances Panel and, if agreed, recommendations are made to an Examination Board to make the final decision on how to apply mitigation (options include extending a coursework deadline or permitting a student to re-sit an exam).
SALC students need to use their online form to submit an application (https://www.alc.manchester.ac.uk/student-intranet/support/mitigating-circumstances/). (This is only applicable to students registered with the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures).
For up to date advice and guidance on applying for mitigating circumstances, please see the Student Support website: https://www.studentsupport.manchester.ac.uk/study-support/mitigating-circumstances/
You should contact your Programme or School Office for advice or further information about applying for mitigating circumstances to be considered. Completed Notification of Mitigating Circumstances forms should be returned to the relevant Programme or School Office for consideration. (Please note that some Schools have their own version of this form, so please check with them before submitting the form).
